The Metal Observer - BLACK ERA 7,5

It seems that every European country produces a band named GOLEM. There’s the German one, one from Finland, one from Denmark, one from France and if my memory serves me right there are also GOLEMs from the US and Brazil! Well as if that wasn’t enough we are treated to another GOLEM here, this time a band from Italy playing Melodic Death metal with hints of Thrash and Prog.

Once the first notes hit you can immediately hear the influences here: IN FLAMES, ARCH ENEMY (the period in between Wages Of Sin and Anthems Of Rebellion), “Rust In Peace”-era MEGADETH and a little of that MESHUGGAH quirkiness. Yes I know it sounds like I’m describing every other Melo-Death band out there, but these guys are actually quite good at what they do and there is more intricacy present in their music, than on the average Gothenburg-clone disc. At times the music takes on the feeling of a free-flowing jam session and becomes equivalent to musical ADD, because there are just too many melodies and drum patterns heaped on top of each other that the final product becomes a little incoherent. Nonetheless, this is quality Death Metal – just check out the title track, “World Of Lies” and the Thrashy yet experimental (listen to those opening melodies at the 22sec mark) “Enemyself”. Nothing groundbreaking, but solid mosh-worthy Metal.

Anybody that likes the Melodic Death template coupled with a little speed and experimentation would do well to check out this band. The sound is good (has that live sound) and the guitarists definitely know their instruments! Good stuff!
